Parents: The most important school supply that you can get your child is a LIBRARY CARD! It can take them to all sorts of places!!
The Bolivar Free Library has computers DIRECTLY CONNECTED to the BOLIVAR RICHBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT. This allows children access to homework projects and other important items!
NO MORE EXCUSES FOR HOMEWORK NOT BEING DONE!
Children needing copies or computer printing are allowed 3 free copies for homework assignments! Please see the librarian for more details.
How to get Children to read more:
- When you go to play at parks read the sign with all the rules. Kids love the play places. Whether inside the fast food restaurants or outside at the park, rules are clearly posted at the entrance. Before entering, give your kids a chance to read them aloud. Or read them together.
-
Make reading the newspaper a family event. It doesn't matter if you read the comics or an article about the neighbors, making the community news a household discussion encourages reading. Watch for articles about people your kids know, the school they attend or landmarks in the community. Or read about upcoming events to attend as a family.
-
Go to the library---check out books!!! This is a free service and children love to go places. Introduce them to the wonderful world of the library.
-
Make scrapbooks full of words. Old magazines and newspapers have thousands of words. Encourage kids to find their favorite words and put them together in a personal scrapbook. What type of words might be of interest? Favorite colors, their name or toys. Instead of just a word on a page, have them draw a picture too.
-
Catching the reading bug also requires a good example. Take a few minutes from your busy day to read in front of the kids as well. Once the kids notice that it is part of life, they too will settle down to grab a book. Nothing can be better than a parental example.
